Habitat for Humanity International (Habitat International) is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, of which Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County (Habitat CFC) is the local affiliate. Habitat International and all its affiliates seek to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. To accomplish these goals, all Habitats invite people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.

Habitat for Humanity achieves No. 6 on the ‘Builder 100’ list

Through the combined building efforts of U.S. affiliates, volunteers and donors, Habitat International recently achieved the rank of No. 6 on the 2011 Builder 100 list, marking the first time it has been among the top 10 biggest builders in the United States.

History

Habitat CFC™ is an independent 501(c)(3) organization and the local affiliate of Habitat International, whose headquarters is in Americus, Georgia.

In September 1976, Millard and Linda Fuller called together a group of supporters to discuss the future of their dream to help those in need of adequate shelter by working side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses. Habitat for Humanity International as an organization was born at this meeting.

In 1984, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn took their first Habitat work trip, the Jimmy Carter Work Project, to New York City. Their personal involvement in Habitat’s ministry brought the organization national visibility and sparked interest in Habitat’s work across the nation. Habitat International experienced a dramatic increase in the number of new affiliates around the country.

Today, Habitat International has built more than 400,000 houses, sheltering more than 1.75 million people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide.
